The Telecentre Access Point (TAP) Program

Public Internet Access

Photo: Telecentre Access Point (TAP)

Providing community access to the Internet.

The Telecentre Access Point (TAP) initiative was originally funded by the Australian Government's Networking the Nation Program to provide an alternative to establishing a full Telecentre in smaller towns. This program concluded in April 2004.

A TAP maximises the opportunity for people to access the internet if they don't already have access in their own home, workplace or even in their town.

These facilities were developed so that people could easily access to the internet and associated information in a publicly accessible location.

If you wish to develop public internet access options the following options should be considered:

  • A self contained coin operated booth, that provides internet access via a secure, stand alone facility requiring minimum supervision. These booths are easily installed, they are easily maintained, robust and able to placed in a variety of locations. Or
  • A PC Package that allows the establishment of an office style workstation and may include items such as a printer and scanner in the addition to personal computers. A supervised location would be required for this option.
